Canadian citizens must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before every trip to Malaysia — the form is mandatory despite the 90-day visa-free entry arrangement for Canadian passport holders. MDAC is completely free (RM 0), takes under 10 minutes to complete at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main, and must be submitted within 72 hours before your scheduled arrival. Unlike American or British passport holders, Canadian citizens are not eligible for the KLIA autogate and must use the standard manned immigration queue.
Submit MDAC as a Canadian — FreeYes — Canadian citizens must submit MDAC before every entry to Malaysia; there is no exemption for Canadian passport holders, regardless of trip purpose or duration. The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card became mandatory for all foreign nationals on 1 January 2024, replacing the paper-based arrival card previously issued at immigration counters. Canadian passports do not appear on any exemption list published by Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia (JIM).
MDAC is entirely separate from a visa. Because Canadian citizens are visa-free for Malaysia, you will not apply for any visa — but you still must submit MDAC before departure. For a complete overview of who is exempt and who must register, see our Malaysia Digital Arrival Card guide.
Canadian citizens enjoy 90-day visa-free access to Malaysia per entry, but MDAC is a separate mandatory requirement that applies regardless of your visa status or length of stay. Canada is among the countries covered by Malaysia's bilateral visa-exemption agreement, meaning Canadian passport holders do not need to apply for a visa sticker, eVisa, or visa on arrival.
This creates a common point of confusion:
The 90-day visa-free allowance is the maximum duration Canadian citizens may remain in Malaysia per single entry. It does not require any application — immigration officers grant it on the spot upon arrival when you present a valid Canadian passport and a completed MDAC QR code. The MDAC pre-arrival declaration must be submitted at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main before you board your flight.
MDAC replaced the paper arrival card that passengers once filled in on the plane. The 90-day entitlement is the visa arrangement; MDAC is the arrival declaration form — two entirely different administrative requirements at the same immigration counter.
MDAC applies at all Malaysian entry points, including:
For nationality-specific requirements and exemption lists, see our MDAC requirements by country guide.
Submit your MDAC at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main within 72 hours before your arrival — the pre-arrival declaration is free, requires no account or login, and generates a QR code confirmation in under 10 minutes. Canadian passport holders complete the same universal MDAC form as all other nationalities — there is no separate Canadian version.
Open imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main in your browser — no app download or account creation required. The portal is mobile-optimised and works on all devices.
Fill in your full name exactly as it appears on your Canadian passport, passport number, date of birth, passport expiry date, and select Canada as nationality. Any mismatch with your physical passport will be flagged at the immigration counter.
Provide your arrival date, flight number, and select your arrival airport (KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, etc.). Select your purpose of visit: Tourism, Business, Transit, or Education.
Provide the address of your first night's stay in Malaysia — hotel name, street address, city, and postcode. If staying at multiple properties, enter only the first. MDAC does not require a full itinerary.
Double-check all fields match your Canadian passport exactly, then confirm submission. The most common rejection cause is a mismatch between the name or passport number entered online and the physical passport presented at the immigration counter.
The system generates a QR code immediately on-screen and emails it to the address you provide. Screenshot the QR code as a backup — airport WiFi can be unreliable. Present this QR code to the immigration officer at the standard counter on arrival. For a detailed walkthrough, see our MDAC registration guide.
Canadian passport holders are NOT eligible to use the KLIA autogate (eGate) for immigration clearance — Canada is not on the approved nationality list, and Canadian citizens must use the standard manned immigration counter on arrival. This is one of the most important practical differences for Canadian travelers compared to American, British, or Australian visitors, who are eligible for the faster automated lane.
The KLIA autogate/eGate system uses biometric passport scanning and facial recognition to process approved foreign nationals without queuing at staffed counters. While Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia has expanded the approved list over time, Canada is currently not included.
The following nationalities are among those approved for the KLIA automated eGate — for comparison with Canadian citizens:
| Country | eGate Eligible | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | ✅ Yes | MDAC QR + biometric passport required |
| United Kingdom | ✅ Yes | MDAC QR + biometric passport required |
| Australia | ✅ Yes | MDAC QR + biometric passport required |
| New Zealand | ✅ Yes | MDAC QR + biometric passport required |
| Japan | ✅ Yes | MDAC required |
| South Korea | ✅ Yes | MDAC required |
| Germany | ✅ Yes | MDAC required |
| Canada | ❌ Not eligible | Standard queue — no autogate access |
For autogate eligibility of other nationalities, see our MDAC for US citizens, MDAC for Australian citizens, or MDAC exemptions guide.
Every Canadian citizen entering Malaysia in 2026 must satisfy two independent requirements: a valid Canadian passport establishing visa-free eligibility, and a completed MDAC submission generating a QR code — the KLIA autogate lane is not available for Canadian passport holders.
| Requirement | Status for Canadian Citizens | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | ❌ Not required | 90-day visa-free per entry |
| MDAC | ✅ Required | Submit at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main |
| MDAC fee | ❌ None — RM 0 | Free; any site charging a fee is unauthorized |
| KLIA eGate (autogate) | ❌ Not eligible | Standard manned immigration queue required |
| Children with Canadian passport | ✅ MDAC required | Each traveler (incl. minors) needs own MDAC |
| Submission window | Within 72 hours before arrival | Cannot submit earlier; one per trip, per person |
| Passport validity | ✅ Valid for duration of stay | Check expiry before travel |

The most common MDAC mistake Canadian travelers make is using unofficial third-party websites that charge fees — MDAC is always free (RM 0) on the official Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia portal, and paying a third party does not guarantee a valid submission. Unauthorized services have been observed charging between CAD $15 and $100 for MDAC "processing assistance." These sites are not affiliated with the Malaysian government and may submit incorrect data that invalidates your entry.
Only use imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. The official JIM portal charges nothing (RM 0). Any site asking for payment is unauthorized and may submit incorrect data on your behalf.
Canadian passport holders cannot use the KLIA eGate. Do not approach the automated lanes. Join the standard "Foreign Nationals" queue and allow extra time — peak periods can mean 30–60 minutes wait.
Your name and passport number must match your physical Canadian passport exactly. Even minor typos are flagged at the immigration counter and can result in delays or secondary screening.
MDAC does not carry over between entries. Each new entry into Malaysia requires a fresh MDAC submission — even if you exited and re-entered the same day.
The submission window opens exactly 72 hours before your arrival date. Attempting to submit earlier will result in an error. Set a calendar reminder to submit 1–3 days before your flight.
Your 90-day visa-free status only removes the visa requirement. MDAC is always required separately — the two systems are entirely independent. "Visa-free" does not mean "declaration-free."
Common questions Canadian travelers ask about the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card — costs, timing, visa-free status, and immigration queue procedures for Canadian passport holders.
No. MDAC is completely free — RM 0 — on the official Malaysian immigration portal at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. Any website or service charging a fee is unauthorized and not affiliated with Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia.
MDAC must be submitted within 72 hours (3 days) before your scheduled arrival in Malaysia. The window cannot be opened earlier — attempting to submit more than 72 hours before arrival will return an error. Submit as soon as the window opens and save your QR code screenshot as a backup.
No. MDAC and visa status are completely separate requirements. Canadian citizens are visa-free for Malaysia (up to 90 days per entry) and do not need a visa. MDAC is a pre-arrival digital declaration form — all foreign visitors, including visa-free nationalities, must complete it before arrival.
No. Canadian citizens are not eligible for the KLIA automated eGate. Canada is not on the approved nationality list for automated immigration clearance at KLIA or KLIA2. Canadians must use the standard manned immigration counter — have your Canadian passport and MDAC QR code ready to present to the officer. This is different from US, UK, and Australian passport holders, who are eligible for the eGate.
The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, and several other nationalities are eligible for the KLIA eGate automated clearance. Canada is not currently on this approved list. See our MDAC for US citizens or MDAC for Australian citizens pages for comparison details.
Yes. Every traveler entering Malaysia — including infants and children — must have an individual MDAC submission. Parents cannot submit a single MDAC covering multiple family members; each Canadian passport holder in the family requires a separate form completed independently.
No. The MDAC portal will only accept submissions within the 72-hour (3-day) window before your scheduled arrival date. Attempting to submit earlier returns an error. Set a reminder to submit between one and three days before your flight.
Arriving without a valid MDAC QR code may result in secondary screening at the immigration counter, delays while you complete the form on airport WiFi, or at the officer's discretion, refusal of entry. The Malaysian immigration department has enforced MDAC as mandatory since 1 January 2024. Always submit before travelling.
Yes. MDAC is required at all Malaysian entry points — including the Johor Bahru (JB) land border crossings from Singapore (Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints). Canadian travelers crossing overland must submit MDAC in advance, exactly as for air arrivals. For special cases and exemptions, see our MDAC exemptions guide.
No. There is one universal MDAC form for all nationalities at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. Canadian citizens complete the same form as travelers from any other country — you will select "Canada" as your nationality during the registration process. No dedicated Canadian version exists.
